Traveling is an expensive past time. You are forced to eat out more often, spend money on transportation, accommodation and not to mention sightseeing fees that cannot be avoided or saved on. It is even more expensive when you are going at it alone! Hotels, resorts and tours sometimes charge a singles supplement, punishing those of us that decide to take a journey by ourselves. Below are the top 5 destinations that I found most solo friendly and at the same time, affordable.

Volcano in Costa Rica |
Costa Rica
Costa Rica has one of the most beautiful natural places in the world. It has volcanoes, rain-forests, beachesand amazing wild life. Jaco beach is surfers’ paradise. It is not only affordable but it is relatively safe. For those who feel more comfortable going on a tour, Costa Rica offers a variety of quite affordable tours thanks to the destination’s popularity.

Machu Picchu |
Most famously known as the place before embarking on a trip to Machu Picchu, Cusco has cheap accommodation. Peru also offers affordable internal flights and food. The only word of caution is that you need to book your Machu Picchu visit in advance as it is restricted to a certain number of visitors per day. Those who love to hike and want to do it on a budget should look into a 3 day trekking tour from G Adventuresor Intrepid.

Karlovy Vary, Czech |
Czech Republic
Prague has beautiful castles and great architecture. As far as culture is concerned this is a perfect place to get lost. As Czech is a country easily traveled by train, it would make a great solo trip. Czech is also known for its spa towns. While Karlovy Vary is for a luxurious treatment, Marianske Lazne is an affordable destination. It attracts a lot of seniors that adds a relaxing atmosphere to the place.

Lisbon, Portugal |
Portugal
Portugal is not only a great beach destination. Sintrais a magical city filled with castles and Palaces, especially Palacio De Pena. Lisbon is a great metropolitan city with lots of stuff to do. The food is delicious and affordable. For those with a sweet tooth Pastel de Nata is a must try especially in Belem, Portugal.
Is on the top of the list for cheap destinations. It is filled with natural beauty, from old sea ports to elephants. There is no shortage of places to see and things to do. Do not miss the floating markets of Mekong Delta.
For those, who do not have a budget you can still enjoy the beauty of those places but on a more upscale level. Do not forget that hostels are a great place to meet fellow travelers and some hostels do offer single rooms and private bathrooms as do basic hotels.
