Churches always fascinated me. Around the world you can find churches of different architectural styles and time periods. They are usually very well preserved and often offer free admittance (a bonus for budget travellers). Below are just a couple of churches that I found fascinating throughout the world. Amsterdam – Basilica of St. Nicholas: Architect: Adrianus Bleijs build in Neo Baroque and Neo Renaissance style in the 19th century.

Mykonos – Panagia Paraportiani: Is a small church, which was actually build on 5 churches. The oldest one was bulid in the 14th century.

Grecia, Costa Rica – Iglesia de la Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes: Is build entirely of metal. There is a legand that the church was shipped by mistake to Puntarenas in Costa Rica but was meant for Punta Arenas in Chile.

Florence- Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore – Also known as Duomo was designed by architect Arnolfo di Cambio. The church started in 1296 but was not complete by 1436. It was build in the Gothic style.

Vaitpae Town in Bora Bora: A small simple church is found in the centre of the town.

Bavaria, Germany: Pilgrimage Church of Wies: Stands closely to the alps and is near the Romantic road. It was designed in the late 1740s by architect Dominikus Zimmermann. It was build in the style of Rococo.

Kutna Hora, Czech Republic – Sedlec Ossuary: Is found about an hour away from Prague, and is one of the freakies places on earth. It is estimated that the skeletons represent 40,000 to 70,000 people. The church was build in the 14th century in a Gothic style and is said to be bodies that took victim to the Black Death and Hussite Wars.
St. Petersburg, Russia – Church of the Savior on Blood: Was constructed in 1883 under Alexander III as a memory for his father Alexander II. Who was assassinated in the place of the church. The architect was Alfred Alexandrovich Parland and was constructed in the style of Romantic Nationalism.

Borgund Stavi Church, Norway – was completed in the 12th century and is one of the few remaining Stavi Churches in Norway. It is made from wood and has 6 gable roofs.

Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin, Cusco, Peru: Is located in the centre of the city Plaza de Armas. It began in 1559, with the majority of workforce were Incas used by the SPaniards. The architect was Juan Miguel de Veramendi and was supervised by Spanish priests during its building.

Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain: Is still being built in Barcelona. It is estimated to be completed in 2026, 100 years after it’s architecture’s death Antoni Gaudi. It was built in the Modernisme style.
